The One Plus One by Jojo Moyes

81ZultmqXDL__SL1500_If you are looking for a great read, then try Jojo’s Moyes new book – The One Plus One.

Jojo was a journalist for 10 years, 9 of those were spent at the Independent, but since 2002 she has been writing novels. Her first book was Sheltering Rain and she has gone on to write eleven more…She has won the Romantic Novelist’s Award twice and the book before her latest ‘Me Before You’ has sold over 3 million copies and has been nominated for Book of the Year at the UK Galaxy Book Awards.

People are so engaged with her stories because as opposed to just being your run of the mill chick-lit, Jojo writes about ordinary people struggling with ordinary things, and her audience therefore relate to the characters.

The World Book Night Book Club wrote the following about ‘The One Plus One’: I want you to read this book, indeed to read all of Jojo Moyes’ books, because they tell truths about modern life. If you’re a sentient, empathic, living, breathing human I would urge you to give it a go.

So what is the book about?

One single mum

Is there such a thing as an Amicable Divorce?

shutterstock_75733573Gwyneth Paltrow, can have a marmite affect in regards to how people feel about her, ‘love her’ or ‘hate her’! This was never more true than when she wrote on her Goop site that her husband Chris Martin – lead singer in Coldplay and she were ‘Consciously Uncoupling.’

The world press mocked their choice of expression for stating that they were consciously uncoupling as opposed to just separating or divorcing, but you have to ask yourself with children involved, is it such a bad idea to try and take a more spiritual approach to divorcing, to keep things amicable and even stay friends?

Many of us are no longer surprised when the latest Hollywood star couple announce that their ‘happy ever after’ has come to an end, but Chris and Gwyneth are hardly leaders of the pack when it comes to amicable separations:

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, made a point of embracing a friendship following their split and this was extended to new partners as they came along, their blended families even holidayed together.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette separated in 2010; at first David was very vocal on the topic, whilst Courteney maintained a very dignified silence. But their joint goal was to remain friends so they could provide stability for their daughter Coco and could co-parent effectively. They were married for over 10 years and they were both satisfied that they had tried hard, but they were just different people wanting different things. They separated in 2010 and even then did not rush things, not divorcing until May 13. Courteney recently said “When you love someone, you want them to be happy, even if it’s not with you.”

Marriage statistics from the ONS bear out the point that often people just grow apart, and that it is not necessarily one big thing that splits people up. In fact only one in seven divorces is sited as being because of adultery. But sadly 42% of marriages will end in divorce, in 2012 in England and Wales that translated to 13 divorces being granted an hour…Compared to 20 years ago, divorce rates are actually falling, splits are most likely to happen between the 4th and 8th year of marriage. 48% of people divorcing will have at least one child at home under the age of 16 so you can see how important it is to remain civil. Although the general trend of divorcing is falling, there is one area that is bucking the trend – the over 60’s. There is a 73% increase since 1991 of men over the age of 60 getting divorced, and the stats are similar for women.

Times have changed, and there are many reasons now thought to contribute to a high rate of divorce in the 60+ age group. People now live longer, once they have raised their children there is still lots of time left to enjoy retirement and they don’t want to do it with someone they no longer love or have anything in common with. Women now work more and so are more likely to have the resources to start again. The stigma surrounding divorce is no longer so strong and with the rise of internet dating, people believe they may meet someone new.

Another couple that have split quite recently and have treated the experience as a positive opportunity to change, grow and learn new roles within a partnerships is Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom. They were together for six years, and have both spoken lovingly about each other post-split. Miranda said “Well, we are very good. We speak every day. We’re really close, we’re going to be a family for ever and we do really love one another.”

Despite these celebrities seemingly having everything – luxury lifestyles, dream job, money etc, they are only human and sometimes the complications of their careers – too much time apart contributes to the breakdown of a relationship.

Despite these celebrities uncoupling in a conscious manner, there are times when divorce is just too painful and difficult for us to be oh so rational. So if you are separating from a partner or going through a divorce then get in touch with us today. At Psychic Sight we have many empathetic readers, some of whom will have gone through divorces of their own that can guide you during this difficult time. There is no reason why you cannot go on to have a happy and fulfilled future.

Sugar v Fat

I-Quit-SugarIf you regularly read a paper or magazines you will know that there is a rumbling in the diet world, we have long be told that fat was the demon in our diet and that to be slim, a healthy weight and fight off diseases we must cut down how much fat we consume, particularly saturated fat.

But now, there is new argument in town that states actually sugar is the enemy and that all of those low fat products we have been eating to keep us healthy have actually been making us fatter!

Easter has just gone, and maybe you indulged in just a bit too much chocolate? And of course with two bank holidays in May, wedding season and summer holidays will be just around the corner, so now is the time that many of us think about losing a few pounds as we shed a few layers of clothing… But you would be right to be confused about just what advice to follow.

Dr Robert Lustig is an American Doctor; he has spent the past sixteen years treating childhood obesity and studying the effects of sugar on the central nervous system and metabolism. He has written a book called: Fat Chance: The Hidden Truth About Sugar, Obesity and Disease.

Dr Robert Lustig believes that sugar is toxic, addictive and everywhere, he knows it is difficult to consider a life that is sugar free, but the diets of processed foods that developed nations are feeding themselves is chronically expanding our waistlines and is soaring levels of diabetes and other serious obesity related illnesses.

In his book he explores the following:

• Why conventional low-fat weight loss advice won’t work: not every calorie is the same, and skipping lunch doesn’t mean it is okay to eat dessert
• Why too much sugar can cause serious illness even if you are not overweight
• How the food industry is filling our diets with hidden sugars – and which foods you must cut out to avoid them
•How governments are complacent about, and even complicit in, exacerbating our food debacle

The World Health Organisation seems to agree that sugar is a problem, and has just slashed its recommend daily intake of sugar in half to around 6 teaspoon per day. The WHO limits apply to all ‘free’ sugar, which is sugar that is added to foods by the manufacturer, plus that naturally present in honey, syrups, and fruit juices.

Of course it is easy to see this as just one more fad making the rounds, in 2013 variations on fasting diets have proved very popular and is look set to continue in 2014. In many women’s magazines or health publications the virtues of the latest celebrity diet plan are often listed in detail. One such diet is the Paleo diet, sometimes known as the Caveman plan. Our cover star is one such advocate, Jessica Biel (married to Justin Timberlake), obviously needs to keep in shape for her career as an actress, signer and model. She has said that she does all her own cooking at home using fresh fish or lean meat like chicken and vegetables. “Eating Paleo just leans you down and slims you up and takes that little layer of fat and water-weight right off your body”. Essentially Paleo followers eat lean protein, vegetables, seafood, nuts & seeds and healthy fats.

There are plenty of other celebrity followers of a Paleo or similar diet lifestyles, such as Miley Cyrus, Megan Fox, Tom Jones, Jack Osbourne, Uma Thurman, Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew McCaughey to name but a few…

Whilst a Paleo type diet may address many of the problems concerning high sugar consumption, it is perhaps too expensive and extreme for most of us, with Nutritionists concerned about the amount of food groups that are excluded. Which is perhaps why books like ‘I Quit Sugar’ by Sarah Wilson are proving so popular.

Sarah is Australian and is a journalist, in 2011 she started a 2 week experiment to quit sugar, her health and wellbeing were impacted so positively in such a short time that she kept going.

The thing is that Sarah did not outwardly look like someone who ate a lot of sugar, she thought she was making good food choices, but even with things like fruit, dried fruit, honey, dark chocolate etc. – the amounts per day soon built up. On working it out a conservative day would see her consume 25 teaspoons of sugar, and that is probably similar for many of us.

Sarah wrote the book ‘I Quit Sugar’ which was published in the UK earlier this year, which is an 8 week detox guide to gradually quitting sugar. The book comes complete with lots of recipes including desserts, snacks, kid’s meals etc.

If you think sugar might be a problem in your diet, why not take Sarah’s test:
Time to quit? You decide!

♥ Do you get an energy slump in the afternoon?
♥ Do you need something sweet after meals?
♥ Does your stomach get bloated after eating?
♥ Are you unable to eat just one piece of cake and walk away?
♥ Are you ‘podgy’ around the middle, perhaps even slim everywhere else?
♥ Do you often feel unclear? That you’re not always sharp and on-form?

Realistically we all know that we have to move more and eat less, but new research is beginning to show that not all calories are created equally, and that the old virtue of cut back by 3500 calories equates to losing a pound of fat may not be so simple for all of us. If you are struggling with weight loss, it might be time to check with your Doctor and look at your sugar intake!

Relationship Alchemy

shutterstock_26495758I have been reading a fascinating text called The Book of Alchemy by Francis Melville, I thought I would share some interesting extracts about The Great Work on the topic of Separation.

“The Great Work or Opus Magnum, is the term used by alchemists to describe the conscious effort to achieve the highest state of purity. The term is applied to both the Outer Work, the perfection of the Philosopher’s Stone, and to the Inner Work, the achievement of divine consciousness. In order to proceed along this path, the initiate must understand, intellectually at first, the nature of cosmic reality”.

Hermes: Thrice Greatest, Hermes or Hermes Trismegistus is considered to have been an early link to divine illuminated adepts such as Moses, Enoch, Plato and Pythagoras. He was a legendary genius of alchemy.

Legend says that Hermes carried a plain wand, one day he came across two snakes that were fighting. He used his wand to separate the snakes, surprisingly following his actions the snakes acted harmoniously and coiled themselves around the wand – forming a caduceus.

The lesson in this legend is that we can identify with the Hermes within ourselves and become reconciled:

Imagine “A man and a woman are in conflict. The man defends himself with sword and shield, while the woman has an eagle on her arm, ready to fly at the man. Hermes separates the polarized couple, armed with a caduceus in each hand, reminding them that they are both responsible for reconciling the polarities within themselves”.

When our souls and spirits are not in harmony a separation occurs. Rather than using the man’s sword or the woman’s eagle as weapons against each other, we must instead see that both symbols represent the element of air which corresponds to breathing, intellect and cognitive imagination. We must harness these elements and use them to resolve our conflicts, so that we can come back together intertwined as a caduceus.

Michaela’s Life Story (PIN: 3232)

Michaela cropped
Michaela had her first spiritual experience at the age of four and has had many such experiences for more than thirty years, but it was not until the late 1990’s that she decided to use her abilities to support others by becoming a psychic Tarot reader.

Before each reading begins Michaela asks her Spirit Guides and Guardians to assist her with each client and thanks them for their guidance. Through her psychic abilities and using her Tarot cards, Michaela has aided many people in difficulties with family members, love and relationships, friendships, bosses & work colleagues and financial worries.

Michaela is equally supportive to those who are looking for a new beginning in romance, moving house or new opportunities in work & business.

Michaela strongly believes that her life experience has been greatly beneficial in improving the quality of her readings and in understanding the needs of people which has made her a very compassionate reader.

At the age of thirty-one and in one day Michaela had lost everything she held dear, her life was in tatters; without warning or discussion her fiancé ended the relationships and removed her from what she considered to be their home. She had lost her partner, her home, her job in his business, her purpose and her identity. Ten months later he married Michaela’s best friend!

Michaela refused to drown in self-pity and a sense of betrayal, instead she rebuilt her life…She found a new home, went back to college, found new friends, started dating and found a new purpose. It was a huge turning point in her life. She found herself reaching out and assisting others which expanded her world enormously. She explored art for the first time – her new life was exciting and rewarding.

Michaela’s philosophy is that with every loss comes strength and a better perception of life. Life is precious and should not be taken for granted…make every minute meaningful.

The deaths of two young cousins aged sixteen and seventeen in a car accident had a profound effect upon Michaela. She comforted their mothers and fathers. The sight of such overwhelming heartache has made Michaela a very compassionate reader, especially when reading for the bereaved.

Equally Michaela can easily sympathise and empathise with those who have sickness and those who care for sick loved ones. Michaela cared for her terminally sick father for two years watching him slowly deteriorate. Today Michaela celebrates his life. He was also a psychic and a natural contemplative and Michaela has adopted his belief that the truth is always the most helpful.

When a young relative died of an accidental drug overdose, Michaela’s family were devastated, so when a close friend admitted that she had an alcohol problem, Michaela was determined to support her friend and so offered to accompany her to a self-help group for addicts. Michaela realised that her knowledge was limited and therefore her assistance was limited so she decided to increase that knowledge, she now attends a self-help group for the family and friends of addicts. Her friend is now sober and healthy.

Michaela respects the various beliefs of those who contact her and does not try to persuade them to change those beliefs as she thinks that each belief is sacred to the individual. Those that believe in the power of Angels may request a reading using Angel cards and Michaela will be happy to do this for them.

In the last two years Michaela feels that her spirituality has deepened and developed considerably, she has had more spiritual experiences and she believes that this is for the benefit of all who contact her. Michaela feels that her work is facilitated by daily meditation and that by reaching out spirituality she is able to assist others by delivering a practical reading.

Through her psychic abilities, spiritual experience and life experiences Michaela gives readings which provide information to her clients allowing them to make better decisions and have happier lives. Experience has taught her that even in the most challenging of circumstances positivity can come from it and she shares her positivity with all who contact her.

The Other Woman

poster-for-the-movie-the-other-womanCameron Diaz is often thought of as a non-serious romantic comedy actress, and it is true that she has played the lead role in some films of this genre such as My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Holiday and Bad Teacher. But she has also acted in more serious films, such as Being John Malkovich, Gangs of New York, Vanilla Sky and There’s Something About Mary where she received Golden Globe Award nominations.

Cameron’s early career was as a model, in fact she got her first acting role in film The Mask by accident, when an Agent for Elite (her modelling agency), had met the film producers of The Mask and knew they were looking for a female lead. Cameron started acting lessons once she had secured the part, the film went on to be one of the top 10 grossing films of 1994 and Cameron was launched as a sex symbol!

For a few years after The Mask Cameron mainly did independent films, and it was only after she returned to more commercial movies that her box office and financial success took off.

Between 1998 and 2009 she appeared in many films – Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her, Any Given Sunday, Very Bad Things…She also played a major part in the adaptation of Charlie’s Angels. In fact she became only the 3rd actress to receive a $20 million fee for her role in Charlie’s Angel’s: Full Throttle. She also voiced Princess Fiona’s voice for Shrek which earned her $10 million. She went on to act in In Her Shoes, My Sister’s Keeper, The Box and Knight and Day.

As well as her Golden Globe Award nominations, she has won the New York Film Critics Best Lead Actress Award for There’s Something About Mary, she is a BAFTA Nominee and in 2013 she was named the highest paid actress over 40 in Hollywood.

Not satisfied with just being an Actress she has recently written a book – called the The Body Book, in it she shares her formula for becoming happier, healthier, and stronger. The book is a positive, essential guide that is grounded in science and inspired by her personal experience. Cameron knows she is a role model for millions of women all over the world. But, as she’d be the first to admit, she hasn’t always been as health-conscious as she is now.

Over the past fifteen years, she has discovered that what she eats is inseparably linked to how she feels and looks. That knowledge – that nutrition impacts life – fuelled her hunger to educate herself about the best ways to care for her body. In The Body Book, Cameron shares what she’s learned and offers a comprehensive guide for women to look and feel their best.

Despite having many happy endings in films, Cameron’s love live has not been plain sailing, she has had a number of high profile long-term relationships, but has not settled yet. Between 1995 and 1998 she dated Matt Dillon, she then had a relationship with Jared Leto, whom she got engaged to in 2000, but in 2003 they broke off their four year relationship. Justin Timberlake and Cameron then dated seriously between 2003 and 2006 until the relationship broke down; her last known relationship was with Alex Rodriguez which started in July 2010 but had ended by September 2011.

She has kept busy since then and 2014 sees the release of 3 films, a remake of Annie where she plays Miss Hannigan, Sex Tape where she is back opposite Jason Segel and The Other Woman.

The Other Woman is a comedy and is out in UK cinemas from 23rd April 2014: After discovering her boyfriend (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – Game of Thrones) is married, Amber (Cameron Diaz) tries to get her ruined life back on track. But when she accidentally meets the wife (Kate) he’s been cheating on played by (Leslie Mann), she realises they have much in common, and her sworn enemy becomes her greatest friend. When yet another affair is discovered Carly – (Kate Upton – Sports Illustrated Model), all three women team up to plot mutual revenge on their cheating, lying, three-timing man. Taylor Kinney (Chicago Fire) also plays in the film as the brother of Kate and he might actually be worthy of Amber’s affections. Nicki Minaj makes her acting debut as one of Amber’s friends, the only one not sleeping with her cheating boyfriend!

The Wisdom of Near Death Experiences, by Dr Penny Satori

Wisdom of Near Death ExperiencesDr Penny Satori worked as a nurse in a hospital for 21 years, 17 of those years were spent caring for people in intensive care. One of her patients had a profound effect on her, she was caring for him the night before he died; he had a prolonged and uncomfortable death – something that Penny found so upsetting she considered giving up nursing. Instead she searched for courses on how to care for patients dying in intensive care, when she came up empty she began reading all she could about death.

Part of her research led her to Near Death Experiences (NED), her rational scientific brain said that these were just patients hallucinating, but curiosity prevailed and after many years of collecting data and analysing it she was awarded a PHD.

In her own works Dr Satori says “There have been many misconceptions about the research that I have conducted. The biggest misconception is that I am investigating life after death. I would like to make it clear that this is not what I have been researching. I am trying to gain a greater understanding of the dying process so that care for dying patients can be improved. This has relevance to us all – we are all going to die and I know I don’t want to go through what that man I looked after went through.”

“What I found with my research was that some people reported experiences while they were deeply unconscious or their hearts had stopped beating. How can people, whose hearts have stopped and by current definitions are clinically dead, report clear, lucid, well-structured experiences when their brains are not fully functional?”

In her book – The Wisdom of Near Death Experiences, she explores what a brush with death can teach us about how we live…The book challenges our preconceptions about the effects that near-death experiences have on the living. The book looks beyond the science through case studies, anecdotal evidence and documented research to demonstrate that NDE have much insight to empower us to live more fulfilled and meaningful lives.

“When I began my research I naively thought I’d have the answers to all of my questions. The reality is that I don’t have all the answers and my research has raised far more questions than it has answered. I have no option other than to remain open minded and explore all possibilities that may lead me to the answers.”

Mother’s Day

Mothers DayMothering Sunday is not on a fixed day each year, but falls on the middle Sunday of Lent, lasting from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday. In 2014 it occurs on 30th March. In earlier times the day was referred to as Mid-Lent Sunday (a day in Lent when the fasting rules were relaxed) in honour of feeding the five thousand (a story from the Bible). It has also been called Refreshment Sunday and Pudding Pie Sunday.

Signature Scents

Signature ScentsSome people find a perfume they like really early on in their life and stick to it and it becomes their signature scent, part of who they are, their dressing routine and they probably do not feel ready to leave the house without it! Other people flit from one perfume to another as the mood takes them. Perfume just like other things in the cosmetic industry is big business, and nowadays it can be more about the celebrity who has endorsed the perfume, or the bottle it comes in that evokes us to buy it just as much as the smell. But getting the right perfume can not only make us feel set for the day but can enhance our mood and wellbeing. Why not create your own signature smell using essential oils and benefit from enhanced health as well as smelling beautiful… (more…)

Bullies in the Work Place

BulliesIn the last year through readings I have come to understand that there are quite a few people being bullied at work. They have expressed that in some cases that they love their job and the work they do and have tried to ignore the bullies. However, in some cases it’s not been that easy to overlook.

There are many forms of bullying which can involve picking arguments and pure rudeness, but it can be more subtle, for example the victim can be excluded and not recognised for their contributions. Also being overloaded with work, then criticised and possibly being blocked for any promotions. (more…)
