Numerology is a form of divination, but it also provides someone taking their first steps into the spiritual world with a way to understand the significance of numbers, like the day and date they were born, their given name, and why the numbers give us a particular energy and meaning.
Pythagoras
I’m sure you remember groaning at school about why you needed to learn the Pythagorean Theorem. However, it is this Greek mathematician’s system that Numerology is based on. He believed that “number is the ruler of forms and ideas, and the cause of gods and demons.” In simpler terms, he believed that the universe was governed by numbers. In his devised system, each letter of the alphabet was assigned a number, and each number was given a specific meaning. This allowed anyone to analyse the significance behind a name or number meaningful to them.
Calculations
Generally speaking, people would analyse a series of letters or numbers. For example, a date of birth or their given name. The number is reduced until a single digit can be revealed. However, there are two exceptions to this rule: if the number is 11 or 22, then it is not reduced any further – these are considered to be Master Numbers and are kept whole. Once a number has been derived, you can refer to the number’s meaning.
Examples
Follow along with our examples, and then you can calculate the numbers for your own personal information.
So, lets assume your name is Samantha:
S – A – M – A – N – T – H – A
1 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 5 + 2 + 8 + 1 = 23 – 2 + 3 = 5
Now, lets assume Samantha was born on the 1st November 1962:
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 2 = 21 – 2 + 1 = 3
A Persons Name
A person’s given name is considered significant as it is the moniker chosen by their parents. However, while growing up, our family may refer to us by a nickname or pet name, which can also hold importance. Lastly, as we transition into adulthood, we may choose to go by a variation of our name. For example, if our given name is Robert but we prefer to be called Bob, this version of our name can also carry significance.
In numerology, it is typical to work out three things related to a name.
Begin by writing the name down. Then, place all the vowels above the name and all the consonants below it. It’s important to note that while ‘y’ is not always considered a vowel, some numerologists choose to treat it as one for these calculations.
Numbers Steps 1-3
1. In the first step, add up all the vowels and reduce them to a single number. This will give you the ‘Heart Number‘, revealing the person’s wishes and desires.
2. For step two, sum up all of the consonants and again reduce them to a single number. This results in the ‘Expression Number’, reflecting how the person presents themselves to others.
3. Moving on to step three, add together the Heart Number and Expression Number, then reduce them to a single number to obtain the ‘Personality Number’. This final number describes their characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses comprehensively.

Many people often compare numbers. At the simplest level, some believe that all odd numbers or all even numbers cause less friction. Others go as far as to analyse all the monikers they use and choose the one that yields the most harmonious results from Numerology calculations.
Date of Birth
The day, date, and year that a person is born can all hold significance, as they have no control over it and cannot legally change it.
Typically, the birth date is added together and reduced to a single number to provide the Destiny Number, as shown above in the calculations section.
Calculating the day of the week can offer further insights into their personality – which is done in the same way as you might work out a person’s name.

6 – All round connection. Love for home and others. Strong call to serve others. The idealist and seeker. Honest, careful, tolerant, uses their imagination and intellect.
7 – Limits, boundaries and endurance – can see the long game, are ahead of their time. Intuitive, mystical and sensitive. Deep-thinking, wise, with an ability to manifest.
8 – Strongly linked to the material world. Driven to succeed. Financially adept. Business-like, decision makers. Organised, successful, ambitious with high self-esteem.
9 – Strongly spiritual – connecting the physical, intellectual and mystical worlds. Energetic and charitable. Artistic and brilliant, finds wisdom from one’s own truths.
Master Numbers
11 – Master Number 11 is associated with individuals who have a strong sense of idealism, often guided by intuition and possessing psychic gifts. These individuals are known for their unwavering determination to achieve their goals and aspirations. They serve as a source of inspiration to others, encouraging them to reach for higher levels of consciousness and spiritual growth.
22 – Master Number 22 possess remarkable capabilities and exceptional talents that make them prominent in any group. They are known for their magnetic personalities and a strong desire to bring positive changes to the world. People with this number are perceived as wise and are frequently sought after for guidance by their loved ones. Their versatile gifts enable them to excel in the various endeavours they pursue.
