Health in the New Year

Food Hospital

Have you been watching The Food Hospital television programme on Channel 4? I have; and I have found it incredibly interesting the impact that making changes in your diet can have on your health and in particular in reducing symptoms of medical conditions you might have. So far in series one they have looked at Diabetes, Migraines, Acid Reflux, Alopecia, Psoriasis, Infertility, Depression, Eczema, Depression, Gall Stones, Menopause and many more. As well as a detailed look at diet in general, obesity and weight loss surgery options.

It is inevitable at this time of year that our thoughts turn to losing a few pounds; and perhaps to cutting down on other unhealthy habits such as consumption of alcohol and smoking. It is not unusual for these things to come in to focus at the beginning of the year after the excesses of Christmas.

Both The Food Hospital and The Daily Telegraph have reported on the British Dietetic Association (BDA) findings recently regarding ‘celebrity / fad diets’. That many of us are likely to turn to at times like these:

Top of their hit list was the Dukan Diet: the BDA says ‘there is absolutely no solid science behind this at all’ and cutting out food groups is not advisable. They point out that even Dr Dukan himself warns of side effects such as a lack of energy, constipation and bad breath.

Alcorexia: this is where people heavily restrict what they eat during the day so they can save calories and drink more alcohol without gaining weight. The BDA says, ‘to do this in order to ‘bank’ your calories so you can go a use them on alcohol is pure madness and could easily result in alcohol poisoning and even death’.

The Blood Group diet: this diet restricts what people can eat based on their blood group. Its premise is that only certain blood groups can handle certain foods. The BDA says the diet ‘is completely based on pseudo-science’, and could lead to serious nutrient deficiencies.

The Raw Food Diet: as its name suggests, this diet focuses on eating food raw but also on eating only unpasteurised dairy products. Although some vegetables are more nutritious when eaten raw, the BDA points out that it means many nutritious foods cannot be eaten at all, and that it carries a risk of food poisoning.

The Baby Food diet: this diet calls for people to eat up to 14 jars of puree or baby food each day. The BDA says that it is a restrictive diet as baby food provides few calories and lacks fibre or texture. Without chewing on firmer food at meal times you may be left feeling hungry.

So what does theFoodHospitaland the NHS recommend for healthy weight loss and life-style changes?

Celebrity Chefs

Have you ever been asked that question “if you were having a dinner party and could choose whoever you wanted to attend (dead or alive) who would you invite?” Well my husband and I have been playing a slight variation – if you were guaranteed any celebrity chef you asked would cook your Christmas dinner – who would you choose?

I have to confess to being really torn between Lorraine Pascale and The Barefoot Contessa – Ina Garten.Lorrainefor making decadent cheesecakes, fresh bread and lots of yummy things with puff pastry. But the thing is I’m just not convinced she eats any of her delectable treats (she used to be a model you know!) So to Ina – not only does she have lovely tasty recipes, but she comes across as lots of fun, with her catch phrases – all together now “how easy is that”. But obviously it would be a requirement that her husband Geoffrey comes along…If this is not making any sense to you tune into the Food Network on Freeview channel 48. My husband didn’t object to my Ina choice, but equally wouldn’t have been remotely opposed to Nigella turning up!

To help you make up your mind here’s a selection of best selling cook books both old and new:

My Week with Marilyn

Marilyn Monroe Life Magazine

In 1956 Marilyn Monroe set foot on English soil for the first time; she was on honeymoon with her husband Arthur Miller (a celebrated playwright) and at the same time she was to shoot ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ starring opposite Laurence Olivier.

That same summer, Colin Clark; newly graduated from Oxford obtained a job as a lowly production hand on the same movie set. Forty years later he recounted his experience in a memoir entitled ‘The Prince the Showgirl and Me’. But one week of the account was missing; this film ‘My Week With Marilyn’ recounts that missing week in glorious detail.

The film was never going to be easy to make; with such an icon like Marilyn Monroe everyone has a vision of her and probably an opinion of what she was like. The difficulties between Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl are well documented. He disliked her tardiness, her drug and alcohol fuelled erratic behaviour and her devotion to method acting. The backdrop of difficulties and disappointments provides a better understanding as to why Marilyn and Colin form such an unlikely relationship.

The film gives you a real glimpse into old Hollywood and what celebrity meant at that time. You see Marilyn as a sweet endearing and vulnerable Michelle Williams person but at the same time someone who was deeply insecure and frantic much of the time. Of course none of this could be portrayed if it wasn’t for Michelle Williams who plays the leading role. Michelle says of the role “To be honest, the part kind of landed in my lap, although I knew immediately that I was going to challenge myself to do it.”

Depending on your age you may know Michelle as the angst ridden teenager she played in the late nineties in Dawson’s Creek. Or perhaps as the Oscar nominated actress in Brokeback Mountain. Michelle tends to be an actress that flies under the radar, but she has made some clever choices – from hard hitting thrillers like Shutter Island to Independent films like Wendy and Lucy. Simon Curtis, the Cranford director who is making his feature film debut with My Week with Marilyn, believed that Williams was “perfect in so many ways. She is one of those actresses that I always want. From Dawson’s Creek onwards, I think she is absolutely marvellous.”

Perhaps on some level Michelle related to the vulnerability felt by Marilyn; being no stranger to tragedy herself or the pressure that being a movie star can bring. Michelle is mother to her six year old daughter Matilda whose father Heath Ledger (herBrokebackMountainco-star) died following an accidental overdose in January 2008. Michelle was subsequently hounded by the paparazzi even though they had split up the previous year. (more…)

Space Stones

Every year dust lands on earth from space; even though meteorites have crashed in to this planet since its creation it is rare to find large fragments.

Many believe that the remnants are of a planet that orbited between Mars and Jupiter; a space that is now occupied by the asteroid belt. Iron and nickel (metallic meteorites) are more common than rocky meteorites.

Then there is a group of meteorites called Tektites, these are scattered around the globe; their origins are unknown but they likely formed millions of years ago when large meteorites struck the earth. In the Czech Republic the Tektites are green and are called Moldavite’s, elsewhere they are usually black or brown with cratered pitted surfaces in the shape of pebbles. (more…)

Days and Nights of the Dead

Halloween

As the clocks go back and the nights draw in; remembrance of the dead feature in many celebrations across the world. From Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night in North America and England, to Dias de Los Muertos in Mexico and Cheung Yeung in China.

The idea of honouring the dead has ancient roots, the Celts believed that Samhain – which is a fire festival marking the end of the harvest, was when the boundaries between the worlds are at their weakest and the dead spirits could return to earth.

Christians celebrate All Hallow’s day sometimes known as All Saints Day or All Soul’s Day where every soul that has not achieved sainthood is prayed for and remembered.  (more…)
