Summer Solstice: King of the Woods

Summer Solstice
Summer Solstice

The month of June, of course, brings Midsummer’s Day! In the UK, the Summer Solstice occurred this morning (21st of June 2022) at 10.13 am. The ‘sol’ in Solstice translates to Sun. As we advance towards the solstice, the sun gets progressively higher in the sky until it reaches its peak.

For us in the UK, it ironically marks the beginning of nights drawing in – although thankfully, this happens slowly and so; we can still enjoy warm, light summer evenings in June, July and August; before transitioning to autumn. However, if you live far from the equator, the summer solstice marks the highest amount of day light hours. Some people will visit countries like Finland, Norway and Sweden around the summer solstice period to experience 24-hour sunlight, sometimes called midnight sun or night-time day-light!

Celebrate the Summer Solstice

If you are looking for ways to celebrate and enjoy the Summer Solstice period, then you would do well to venture out into the woodlands:

Celtic Tradition

Under Celtic tradition, the most significant tree in woodlands in the summer phase is the Oak Tree. These broad-leaved trees provide much-needed shade and add an air of mystery to any forest. Druids considered that oak trees were ‘King of the Woods’. Roman historians have pontificated that ‘Druid’ was related to the Greek word for oak (drus).

2000 Years

Nobody would argue the majestic nature of the oak tree, but it is also revered; for its longevity. It is not unusual for an oak tree to survive for 2000 years! Which is arguably even stranger; when you consider that it is also the most likely tree to be struck by lightning!

Gods

An oak tree hit by a lightning storm, can be explained by its tendency to grow above underground-streams. But whatever the reason, this tree has long been; associated with Gods like Thor and Zeus. They, of course had power over lightning and thunder and the Roman God – Mars, for the connection to woodlands.

Seasons

In the lead up to the Summer Solstice, the Oak Tree will be growing in power, crowning in the glory of lush green leaves. The oak tree symbolises everything this season offers: Vitality, Optimism, Fertility, Focus and Regeneration. But eventually, this tree’s might will be toppled by the Holly King, who ventures in for the Winter Solstice – but until then – enjoy!
