Autumn TV

Tess Daly Featureflash Photo Agency / Shutterstock.comAutumn is signified by many things – the nights draw in, the woolly tights scarves and gloves have to be found, the central heating gets clicked on, round tins of sweets arrive in the shops and of course television. Yes, a guilty pleasure for many of us up and down the country will be getting home from work, eating some comfort food (sausages & mash anyone?) and putting on PJ’s early and settling down to watch some good old fashioned TV.

Well by the time you read this some programmes will have already started – Strictly Come Dancing (partly presented by our cover star – Tess Daly), The X Factor, Poldark, Victoria and comedy remakes – Are You Being Served? and Goodnight Sweetheart to name a few.

But there is still more autumn viewing coming that will bring brightness into your lives as the seasons leaves turn a different shade of colour outside:

Westworld

This is a new series and the executive producer is JJ Abrams who successfully rebooted the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. The cast is weighty – including Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Thandie Newton. The programme has a Sci-Fi flavour as a remake of Michael Chrichton’s film in1973 about a theme park run by robots that go haywire. Sky Atlantic – Oct 16

The Missing

This will no doubt have mixed reactions, the first series starred James Nesbitt, and whilst many were gripped with the series, others felt it veered off course and became confusing.  For the second outing there is a new case and a new cast (David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes), although the original Detective Julien Baptiste played by Tcheky Karyo returns. BBC One – Oct 16

Black Mirror

If you have been watching this programme then you may need to turn to Netflix as they outbid Channel 4 for the 3rd season. The Emmy award winning series promises a further satirical dark look at modern society. 21st Oct 16

The Young Pope

You’ll probably be really surprised when you hear that the part of the Pope is played by Jude Law! But it is actually an imagining of the first American Pontiff. The character – Lenny Belardo starts as a conflicted cardinal…Diane Keaton stars alongside as Sister Mary. Sky Atlantic – 27th Oct 16

Dark Angel

If you liked Joann Froggatt in Downton Abbey, then you will be glad to see her in Dark Angel playing Victorian Serial Killer – Mary Ann Cotton. Whilst the material is dark her Golden Globe acting is sure to entertain us. ITV – Nov 16

Class

No autumn line up is complete without Doctor Who, but in this case – Class is a spin-off. It begins in 1963 in a high school environment, but this is not the normal case of teenage angst of sixth formers, they must endure the consequences of the Doctors time travelling – which in this case means monsters creating havoc on Earth! Autumn – BBC Three & BBC One

Damned

Jo Brand is once again in a welfare setting (think overworked and stressed social workers) battling red tape and budget cuts. It’s a comedy drama co-starring Alan Davies and Kevin Eldon. Hopefully it will be as excellent as her hospital sitcom Getting On. Autumn – Channel 4
