We’ve all witnessed that situation where you’ve had that uncanny feeling of having experienced something before and being able to recall the exact event.
Déjà vu comes from the French term for ‘already seen´ and was given its name by the French psychic researcher Émile Boirac in his book ‘L’Aevnir des sciences psychiques’ (The Future of Psychic Sciences).
Sigmund Freud described the Déjà vu experience as the ‘previous experience most frequently attributed to a dream, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience has genuinely happened in the past’. Or in other words, the experience is accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity.
Charles Dickens wrote in the famous David Copperfield ‘in a remote time of our having been surrounded, dim ages ago, by the same faces, objects and circumstances of our knowledge perfectly what will be said next, as if we suddenly remember it’! (more…)
